Ward councillor hands out new school shoes to learners
Jiyane said the shoes were given to deserving learners who were identified during door-to-door visits
The ANC’s Ward 7 Oupa Nkadimeng branch handed over new school shoes to 10 learners from the branch’s five voting districts on Friday, January 5.
Parents arrived at Oasis of Life Church to witness the first handover of a programme that was initiated by ANC Oupa Nkadimeng chairperson Ali Tleane and councillor Thabang Jiyane.
Jiyane said the shoes were given to deserving learners who were identified during door-to-door visits as coming from indigent families.
“The shoes programme will continue,” he said, adding: “From now on we are going to engage businesses to partner with the ward in this initiative.
“It is the first time it was happening, but we going to make it an annual event and expand it to benefit between 50 to 100 learners.”
The children that received new shoes were from Inqayizivele Secondary School, Bertharry English Private School, Kingdom Ryl, Thuto Ke Maatla Secondary School and the Dominion Church.
“We took two children from each voting district, and this will not stop here, we will bring more sponsorships in partnership with businesses,” said Jiyane.
The councillor also congratulated the class of 2017 in his ward for exceeding the minimum 80 per cent pass rate expected of them in the final matric exams.
Inqayizivele Secondary School recorded an 83 per cent pass rate, Bertharry English Private School a 100 per cent pass rate, and Kingdom Ryl, Thuto Ke Maatla Secondary School an 88 per cent pass rate.
