EFF donates food to Dann Road squatters
The party says it is committed to helping the squatters with employment
EKURHULENI EFF donated food packs to the Dann Road squatters on Thursday, saying many people in the informal settlement have no identity documents to find employment to feed their families.
Fikile Mafuyeka, the party’s representative, said: “We are donating basic food packs comprising vegetables, mealie meal, sugar, cooking oil, tinned fish, tea bags, flour and soap. These are basic items they may need in their homes.”
Mafuyeka said steps by the party are afoot to help them replace their IDs. She said prior efforts had been made by the EFF, through the national Department of Home Affairs, to help people apply for new IDs.
“What we are doing on a daily a basis, is to send a small group of people to the department. We expect to complete the process by the end of February. Each and every person who resides here should have his or her own ID by that time.”
Mafuyeka said the food packs were not mere handouts. The EFF aims to ensure that the people in the squatter camp are employed in order to sustain their lives.

“We want people to live proper and decent lives. For now, because they do not have IDs, we are going to assist with food parcels until such time that everyone has an ID. Once that is done, we will embark on a journey to empower them,” she said.
“We know that there have been a lot of things about squatter camps, but people need to understand that black people belong in Africa.
“These people here are not going anywhere. We as the EFF are going to make sure they get everything they need – from food to basic amenities. The only thing that remains is the issue of electricity, but we are going to make sure that we fight for it.”
