It is that time of the year when members of Bakgotsi Social Club continue to fulfil their pledge to the learners of Tembisa High School.
February 16 saw members of the Bakgotsi Social Club visit the Tembisa High School to donate new school uniforms to fifteen learners. The club also paid school fees for the learners.
The school uniform initiative forms part of the club’s outreach programme to ensure that children from vulnerable families of Tembisa High acquire school uniforms in order to facilitate access to education.
It is over fifteen years now that Bakgotsi Social Club has been committed to giving back to the neediest learners at the school. The uniform includes a school jersey, trousers, a shirt, a blazer, a sweater, a jacket, a skirt, a blouse, two pairs of socks and shoes.
“As former students of Tembisa High, we are aware that the school is characterised by students coming from poor families who are unable to buy school uniforms. We have decided to intervene in order to uplift these learners so that they can perform better in their academic studies,” said the club’s secretary John Mngadi.
Mngadi added that the aim is to offer learners an equal opportunity to escape the stigma of those who come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
“The learners will have the confidence to go to class and learn skills, which will help them alleviate the extreme poverty that is facing communities,” added Mngadi. Tembisa High School principal Steve Ngwane said the donation will help to create a conducive environment in the school whereby learners would be free to learn without being mocked for not having a proper uniform.
“We appreciate the partnership of Bakgotsi and we hope the donation will benefit the school for many years to come. “This donation is also helping and relieving stress for those parents who have no cent to purchase a school uniform for their children,” added Ngwane.
One of the beneficiaries and Grade 10 learner Khani Maluleka, thanked members of Bakgotsi Social Club for being dedicated to helping them.
“This type of donation is a great lesson to us as learners. We are hoping that one day we will be able to pick up from where you’ve left,” said Maluleka.
