Accidental discharge of firearm lands guard in hospital

He sustained a gunshot wound to his left lower leg

A cash-in-transit guard is in hospital after his own gun went off accidentally.

The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon on Wolff Street in the central business district.

The incident happened as the guard got out of the vehicle parked on Wolff Street.

“The exact circumstances surrounding the shooting are unclear but from information gathered on scene, a male guard, aged between 20-25, who was working as a crew in the back of the armed cash van, was wounded during an accidental discharge of his own firearm,” said Netcare 911’s spokesperson, Nick Dollman.

“He sustained a gunshot wound to his left lower leg and a secondary injury to his left hand which was probably a ricochet from the bullet.”

The guard was transported to a hospital for further treatment.

“We treated him for two gunshot wounds but the one in his leg was the more serious one. He was in a stable condition and though our paramedics were on the scene, he was transported by an ambulance from another service to a nearby private hospital,” explained Dollman.
