Edleen residents object to cellphone mast at church

Residents are encouraged to visit the information table about this on Saturday

Many Edleen residents are up in arms about the proposed construction of a 35-meter high cellular phone mast on a church’s premises.

According to Edleen Proper Resident Association chairperson Kevin Walker, in an objection letter to the Department of City Planning, this suggested cell mast and base station installation holds many threats to the community.

“Many applicants allow these ‘monsters in our midst to be erected [because of the income they will receive],” the letter reads.  However, Walker insists the mass will be hazardous to residents’ health.

According to the World Health Organisation, whom Walker quotes in his objection, some health risks include headaches, insomnia and elevated stress levels. This, Walker’s says, is due to the electromagnetic field that the mass produces.

“This is a high density residential area and not ideal for a cell phone mast,” he told Kempton Express.

“Residents would prefer not to have these in residential  areas but rather in more open areas. They have also questioned whether there is not safer and more modern technologies like fibre optics for this purpose.”

An information table about this issue will be held at Pick n Pay in Colin Paul Street on Saturday, March 3, from 9am till noon. Residents, Walker said, are welcome to attend.
