Thembisa journalist Mfanelo Dzanibe recognised at GBV Awards

Founder of Thembisa Online, Dzanibe was awarded third place for his work highlighting community voices and raising awareness on gender-based violence.

The 5th Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Awards, held on May 30, honoured individuals and organisations for amplifying the voices of survivors and strengthening efforts to combat gender-based violence.

The annual ceremony recognises those who have made meaningful contributions to raising awareness, supporting victims and creating platforms where affected individuals can share their stories safely.

Among the winners was Mfanelo Dzanibe, founder of the digital platform Thembisa Online, which uses community storytelling to highlight local news while also providing a safe space for victims of violence to speak out.

Dzanibe said the recognition gave him an opportunity to reflect on the impact of his community journalism work.

“When you are a journalist, you are often required to balance a story and cannot always express personal views. These awards gave me a platform to express myself and connect with the people who engage with our stories every day,” he said.

He added that being named third in a national category was a proud moment, especially since it was decided by public vote.

“I came third in a national award, which in Thembisa feels like first. I was actually working on production during the event and was not even in a suit like the other nominees, but behind the scenes broadcasting the ceremony. When I made my speech, I made sure to acknowledge our loyal viewers,” he said.

Dzanibe said the award reflects the growth of his platform, which started with basic mobile phone recordings and has since developed into a more established media operation with professional equipment and a growing audience.

His work first gained wider attention through VOT, where he developed a similar community storytelling approach before launching his own platform.

“The biggest highlight in my career was working with DJ Shimza.

“When he came on board, things changed for us. He gave us the support we needed, and we are now able to deliver high-quality production across provinces.

“That support also helped us grow from a small team into one that now employs people and contributes to the local economy,” he said.

Dzanibe also credited other supporters, including Noah Moleya, Mr Mkhize, members of the community, and SAPS officials who engage with his platform.

He said his work is driven by the Thembisa community, which continues to support and shape his platform.

“This platform belongs to the community. Without Thembisa, there is no Thembisa Online,” he said.
