Rains pours into house as metro fails Tembisans’ plight for help

Nkosi had to use buckets to take water out of her house

Heavy rains flooded an old woman’s house, leaving her furniture soaking in water on March 22.

A storm hit the Tembisa area on January 9 and blew away roofs of 66 houses, leaving 243 people stranded. According to the City of Ekurhuleni’s reports, the municipality appointed consultants to assess and quantify the aftermath of the storm.

Among the affected was Fikile Nkosi, who resides with her sick sister and two children aged 13 and 10.

Nkosi said the City of Ekurhuleni had promised to assist residents in replacing their roofs but the city never came back. She said she is unemployed and her sister is also not working so they can not afford to fix the roof themselves.

City of Ekurhuleni acting spokesperson at that time, Zweli Dlamini, had confirmed that consultants started their work of assessing the aftermath of the storm from January 15, but Nkosi said nothing had come of that exercise.

“Our local councillor in Ward 4, Pat Mkhabela, promised that the City of Ekurhuleni would fix the roofs in the first two weeks after the storm but that did not happen.

“In February, there was another storm and I went to tell the councillor about our ordeal and she promised to bring me Zozos in which I could put my belongings and protect them from getting ruined in the rains. The councillor did not do that and I never heard from her again,” said Nkosi.

Following the rain that poured the whole day on March 22, Nkosi had to use buckets to take water out of her house and she is left stranded with no one to help her.

She said whenever it is raining they cannot sleep and it took her the whole night to remove the water from the house.
