Golfers raise money for House Otto

Avion Park Golf Club raised R8 000 for House Otto during a charity golf day at the club on March 24.
House Otto is a self-help home for paraplegics and quadriplegics in Birchleigh and is in dire need to keep its doors open.
Many golfers also donated food parcels that were handed over to House Otto on the day.
“We would like to thank Spyker Francis as the main sponsor and the man that initiated the golf day. Other notable sponsors were Edleen Spar, Metto Blasting, Jurie Maré and Billy Heridge,” the club said.
The winners of the betterball played on the day were A O’Bryan and E Botma (44). Second were M and A Knoesen (also 44) and third M Knoesen and J Britz (44 as well).
Most of House Otto’s residents have nowhere else to live. One such resident is chairperson July Mathebula (37), who has been living at House Otto for nine years.
The home was established in 1984 when a group of young quadriplegic people was repeatedly denied accommodation due to the severity of their disabilities. After only old age homes accepted them, they decided to create their own lobby group, after which the Quadriplegic Association was born.
Today, House Otto provides residents with the opportunity to further educate themselves through bursaries and workshops. Boarders also gain managerial experience by serving on House Otto’s committees. The residents of this house have become a family, where each person has their own chores to do.
