UPDATE: High speed involved in fatal collision on R25

Netcare 911 communications officer Tebogo Magoro said no injuries were suffered by the truck driver.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) spokesman Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago says although it is not clear what caused the fatal accident on the R21 last night, high speed and skipping a red traffic light might have been the cause.

“Preliminary investigations reveal that a truck entering the R23 roadway from the R21 freeway was sideswiped (fell on its side) by a Golf travelling at high speed on the R23, which disobeyed a red traffic light before the crash,” explained Kgasago.

Kgasago further added that the accident involved a blue VW Golf with two male occupants in their 30s, who were declared dead on the scene by medical experts, and a white Toyota Hino 8-ton rigid truck with two male occupants, who didn’t sustain any visible injuries but were treated at the scene for shock by paramedics and chaplains.

“The EMPD Accident Reconstruction Unit was summoned to the scene and a case of culpable homicide is being investigated by Kempton Park SAPS.”
