WATCH: EFF shows solidarity with Shoprite workers, bad service at hospital

Ward 12 EFF chairperson Freddy Mosena said a patient who recently died asked his family to send the EFF a note concerning these issues

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) took a stand to fight alleged corruption happening at Tembisa Hospital and Shoprite stores in Tembisa on March 29.

Ward 102 EFF chairperson Mpho Mokoka said the EFF handed over a memorandum to address the dire situation at the hospital where there is a lack of service delivery.

“The premier of Gauteng, David Makhura, is intervening but there are no changes.

“We appeal to the hospital’s management and staff to resolve the matter. If they are not going to do that it means the community will lose hope in the management and staff of the hospital,” said Mokoka.

Mokoka said the party gave the hospital seven days to respond to their grievances.

“If they do not respond we will make sure that the hospital’s CEO, Dr Lekopane Mogaladi, gets fired.”

He added that among the contents of the memorandum they demand that doctors who are doing in-service training must not be allowed to work with patients without being monitored or supervised.

Mokoka said even the causality area is overcrowded and patients are not attended to by the nurses on duty.

“We want an increase of staff, resources and an increase in the number of ambulances. They must extend the hospital’s buildings to accommodate the growing population.”

Ward 12 EFF chairperson Freddy Mosena said a patient who recently died asked his family to send the EFF a note concerning these issues.

“The patient overheard nurses communicating with a mortuary that the nurses will call the mortuary when the patient dies and they will be first to get the client. That means there is no service delivery there,” said Mosena.

EFF members said if nothing comes of the exercise they will bring in party leader Julius Malema to come and monitor the situation.

After the handing over of the memorandum, the EFF proceeded to different Tembisa Shoprite outlets to show solidarity to complaining employees.

Mosena said Shoprite employees work long hours which exposes them to crime in the community.

“Employees get robbed of the belongings and get raped.

“We are engaging with the management to assist by providing employees with a transport allowance.

“If they work late, they have transport to take them home.

“The other thing they are complaining about is permanent employment.

“Employees work two to three years without being employed permanently,” said Mosena.

He said they will engage with Shoprite management nationally because they are dealing with all Shoprite outlets.
