WATCH: Rhodesfield residents are ready for safety
A sense of community hung in the air, together with looming clouds.
Rhodesfield residents gathered on Saturday morning last week to start the Easter weekend on a healthy note.
Despite the looming clouds, young and old gathered to take part in a fun walk organised by security company Airwolf and the Sector Five Crime Forum.
According to Airwolf’s CEO, Ockert Snyman, they want children to know that they are safe in their area. “We are here for the children but also for the parents so they know their children are safe when playing in the streets.”
The 40-minute walk started in Household Street, where about 50 excited children waited to start. Their ages ranged from a toddler in a pram to a pre-primary girl on a pink and white bicycle.
One little boy looked in awe at a security member dressed in camouflage pants. To him, the security member probably looked like life-size GI Joe.
At a yellow house on the corner, a man was mowing his lawn. Dogs could be heard barking in the background as children sped by on their bikes, jumped in the air and played tag.
This sense of community is exactly what the chairperson of Crime Forum of Sector Five, Gerrie Germishuizen, hoped to achieve. “It’s all about safety. Our community must be able to get together and get to know each other.”

He added that the forum cares about their children, their community and also the police. “Members of the community must know that we, together with our security and the police, are here for them.”
The group was later joined by the police’s Capt Minyageni and Capt Magcuntsu, who reiterated this message.
