DA laud EMPD bravery during Dann Road raid

'We welcome the actions taken by the EMPD in ensuring that criminal activity does not take place in the settlement pending the court’s decision,' said Terblanche.

The DA in Ekurhuleni has welcomed the metro police raid at the Dann Road squatter camp on May 11.

Clr Jaco Terblanche, DA member of the community safety oversight committee in Ekurhuleni, commended the EMPD’s bravery who, acting on a tip-off from the community, faced violent actions from certain residents in the informal settlement who threw stones and other objects at the raiding officers. Shots were fired in return.

“Since the commencement of the land grab, the DA has questioned the legality and legitimacy of the informal settlement after the City of Ekurhuleni did not follow due process in providing basic services to the residents.

“While the DA supports the Constitutional right of every citizen to basic services and human dignity, we also support the right to private property ingrained in the Constitution of South Africa. Not complying with relevant legislation creates a dangerous precedent in the metro,” Terblanche said.

“While the question of eviction of residents of the informal settlement remains in the hands of the High Court, we welcome the actions taken by the EMPD in ensuring that criminal activity does not take place in the settlement pending the court’s decision.”
