WATCH: Glen Marais veld fire crackles at residents’ doorsteps

Wild birds in the area fled to nearby trees to escape the smoke.

A veld fire covered parts of Glen Marais in smoke on Saturday afternoon. The fire appeared to be in the field on the corner of Vlei  Street and Pretoria Road, close to the edge of residential estates.

Smoke could be seen from as far as Monument Road.

When Express arrived on the scene at about 12.30pm, no visible flames could be seen, but the crackling of the fire could clearly be heard.

No emergency responders were on the scene at the time. At 1.15pm, a Kempton Park Fire Station telephone operator told Express the station would send a response team.
