Father, pa, utata, ntate or ubaba. In whichever way you choose to say it, people across South Africa will celebrate their dads this Father’s Day, June 17.
Originally, the day started as a Catholic celebration in Europe during the Middle Ages. During the feast of Saint Joseph, who was considered Jesus’ earthly father, fatherhood was honoured. Today, it has spread across the world.
Kempton Express visited the Grade Ones of Kreft Primary School and Laerskool Kruinsig to hear what they had to say about their dads.
Fumani Makhubela (6) says: “My father is strong and always helps me whenever things go wrong, with love.”
To Zamandaba Mgwigwi (6) her father is the best because he makes her laugh too much.
“He also picks me up and I like him.”
For Chris Mncube (6) Father’s Day is the best because he also gets spoiled. “My dad always has something nice for me and I love him so much.”
Out of all the dads in the world, Chantelle Phillemon (6) believes her father is the best. “He is kind to me and I love my dad. Happy Father’s Day, Daddy.”
At Laerskool Kruinsig, Simoné Venter (7) says she loves her dad because he rides bike with her.

Lusinda Beetge (7) loves hers because: “He kicks the ball with me.”
“I love my dad because we swim together,” says Marissa West (7).
“I love my dad because he takes good care of me,” says Mieke du Plooy (7). “He also loves me a lot.”
