Miss Earth SA semi-finalist helps clean up Tembisa
Ranoto cleans Tembisa to protect the environment.
Over 25 Phomolong Secondary School learners joined hands with Dikeledi Ranoto to clean the township on June 23.
Ranoto is a regional semi-finalist in the Miss Earth South Africa 2018 pageant and is tasked with a responsibility of organising a campaign that can help the community.
“Cleanliness in one’s environment is very important because it contributes towards a healthy lifestyle.
“The theme of the event was ‘Beat Plastic Waste’ because daily disposal of plastic ends up in our streams.
“Plastic takes about 450 years to decompose and this means plastic disposal becomes a hazard to our animal life and marine life,” said 22-year-old Ranoto.

She said township people, in general, do not mind disposing of waste anywhere they feel like.
“This campaign will bring awareness and information to our local community.
“It says we can contribute towards environmental change and it says let us be the change we want to see,” Ranoto explained.
Ranoto appealed to the community to be consistent in making sure that their surroundings are kept clean and that will improve the quality of their children’s lives when it comes to health.
“Children are defenseless against infections.
“Parents can avoid infections by maintaining cleanliness in their environment,” said Ranoto.

She said the campaign was sponsored by Drink-O-Pop, Ekurhuni Waste Management and Bethesda Intercession Church.
Ranoto thanked Creative Minds Academy (CMA) who helped to identify the young people who took part in the campaign.
“I want to thank all sponsors for enabling us to make the cleaning campaign a possibility and a success,” Ranoto expressed gratitude.
Sheperd Moloto, a representative from CMA, said the campaign went very well and believed that young people will be environmentally aware of waste pollution.
“I was in doubt that the youth will take part but the number that showed up impressed me.
“Thank you to everyone who took part,” said Moloto.
