MONICA van Loggerenberg (28) of Birchleigh, who was seriously injured in an accident on July 8, which claimed the lives of two of her children, has opened her eyes for the first time on Sunday.

According to family members, she also moves her arm and leg.

On Tuesday Monica was still on life support and could not breathe on her own.

Her two children who died, Jean-Pierre (8) and Mackayla (3) van Loggerenberg, were buried from Maranatha Community Church on Friday.

Learners from Laerskool Birchleigh, where Jean-Pierre was a grade two learner, posted letters on the school’s fence last week in sympathy of the family’s loss.

Monica has still not been told about her children’s deaths. Her eight-month-old baby Abigail van Niekerk and fiancee, Juan van Niekerk, escaped without serious injuries. The accident happened on Atlas Road at the intersection with Bass Street.
