Kaalfontein man gets 15 years for murdering his girlfriend

Domestic violence in Ivory Park is rife

The station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, has expressed satisfaction at a 15-year effective jail sentence handed down to a Kaalfontein man for the murder of his girlfriend.

Xolani Prince Mdaka, 23, of Kaalfontein was last week sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court for the 2017 fatal stabbing of his then girlfriend, Moipone Mokgalabone, 21, at the former’s home.

According to the Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Captain Bernard Matimulane, the victim was stabbed multiple times by Mdaka amid cheating accusations.

“Immediately after he was handed the docket for further investigation, Detective Constable Eddie Lebopo followed all the leads meticulously, identified the key witnesses and these efforts culminated in the conviction last week.

“Domestic violence in Ivory Park is rife and we believe that this conviction and lengthy sentence will serve as a warning to anyone prone to committing spousal abuse that full might of the law is bound to catch up with them,” said Ngcobo.

“My appreciation goes to Constable Eddie Lebopo for his tireless efforts and, most importantly, to the witnesses who made statements and testified when needed because, for us, some cases are lost due to the reluctance of witnesses of crime to come forward,” added Ngcobo.

The Ivory Park SAPS is further appealing to anyone in an abusive relationship to speak out and seek the necessary assistance before it gets too late.

“Before a domestic violence can end up in something worse such as murder, chances are that the signs would have been there. These signs include, but are not limited to, jealousy, stalking, going through phones and excessive controls to verbal threats,” said Ngcobo.
