The metro police’s SWAT unit arrested three suspects who were planning to rob a RAM courier truck in Benoni on Monday.
Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesperson, said they received information about the planned crime. The vehicle shadowing the RAM truck was closely monitored by the officers.
“On Monday, around 8am on the N12 exit between Bunyan and Tom Jones streets, at a red traffic light, three occupants in a Honda Civic SUV assailed the RAM truck and were immediately cornered and arrested by the metro police officers,” Kgasago said.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that one of the suspects has twenty-four outstanding cases and failing to appear in court on several occasions. The address given by the driver of the Honda did not match the one reflected on the system.
“It is believed the arrested suspects had accomplices in another vehicle, which disappeared when the occupants realised their partners in crime were being intercepted by the metro police. In-depth investigations will be conducted to verify the preliminary results obtained. No firearms were found on the persons of the arrested suspects. The Honda SUV was confiscated and taken to SAPS Van Ryn pound in Benoni for further investigations.”
The trio, whose ages are between 30 and 38, were detained at Benoni Police Station on charges of attempted robbery.
