Police stop Clayville RDP house invaders in their tracks, 24 arrested

The 24 were part of a group of marchers who came all the way from Tembisa

The station commander of Ivory Park SAPS, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, has welcomed the arrest of 24 people for public violence and malicious damage to property on July 24.

According to the Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Captain Bernard Matimulane, the 24 were part of a group of marchers who came all the way from Tembisa with the intention of illegally occupying RDP houses at Extension 45, Clayville. Something that the law enforcement agencies were not about to tolerate.

“Once it became clear to the marchers that the police, comprising the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officers, were not going to accept this form of lawlessness, they resorted to violence, damaging the windows of the properties in question,” said Matimulane.

Ngcobo said they wanted to send a strong message to any grouping or formation that violence and anarchy will never be tolerated in their area.

Ngcobo was complimentary of the speed with which the SAPS units and their EMPD counterparts worked to respond to the area where they brought order.

“The suspects were expected to appear in Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on July 26 to face charges of malicious damage to property and public violence,” said Ngcobo.
