Rhodesfield residents are worried that an unaddressed burst pipe in their area may cause a sinkhole.
The pipe, located in the middle of the Gladiator and Albatross streets intersection, is said to have burst on Sunday. It has been leaking thousands of litres of water ever since.
“This was reported over the weekend and nothing has been done,” Clr Simon Lapping told Express on Tuesday. “The head of department responsible needs to face the music for this fiasco.”
According to Lapping, he counted about seven leaks in the road through which water was running.
“It is clear that Gladiator Street needs to be closed off, but no such attempts have been made. This is a disaster waiting to happen.”
When Express arrived on the scene on Tuesday morning, water covered the entire bottom half of the intersection. Water could be seen seeping out of the pipe and into pools of water, which had formed on the road and in front of homes. No officials were on site.
At one spot on Gladiator Street, someone had placed a row of bricks for pedestrians to cross over without getting wet. Three locals, each with a bucket, could also be seen collecting some of the running water.
“We need urgent help,” resident Melanie Warner sent to Express via Facebook. “The water has now started forming a sinkhole.” According to her, the municipality has been notified several times.
Express has contacted the municipality for comment.
