WATCH: Striking Tembisa Hospital workers locked out of premises

Workers claim some staff are harassed by hospital management, particularly shop stewards

Several of Tembisa Hospital staff members took to the streets on Wednesday marching against the poor management and unfair treatment towards workers at the hospital.

The marchers assembled at Sethokga Park at around 9am, where the march commenced before they could head to the hospital.

They were led by the Congress of South Africa Trade Union, Justice Forum, SACP, Nehawu and some community members. Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) attended the march to escort the staff members.

Workers claim some staff are harassed by hospital management, particularly shop stewards. There is lack of respect for unions and their labour rights and indecent language are used towards female workers, particularly in the nursing division, staff members said.

They claimed there is a divide and rule strategy that is being applied by hospital management. Several of the workers partaking in the march have put in leave to protect their jobs and be able to feel free when marching for their rights.

On their arrival at the hospital, security officers locked the gates denying them entry. The angry marchers waited for hospital management to attend to them while singing songs and holding placards, saying they demand respect from doctors and to stop nepotism.

They were waiting to submit a memorandum with their grievances to the hospital CEO Lekopane Mogaladi.

More information will follow.
