WATCH: Water from burst pipe at Barnard Stadium damages playing fields

“I work for the municipality and I can't even get them to do anything,” a complainant told Express.

A burst pipe at Barnard Stadium has been leaking thousands of litres of water for at least three weeks. Although the issue has been reported, the municipality is yet to address it.

“This is municipal ground and nothing has been done,” a complainant, who wished to remain anonymous, told Express about the gushing water at Red Sox Baseball Club located at Barnard Stadium.

He said he is an employee of the municipality, “and I can’t even get anyone to come out”.

When Express visited the scene on Tuesday morning, water could be seen streaming out of the pipe. So much water had been released that it had seeped into the ground and formed a water channel that continued for metres.

“What a shame,” a passer-by, visiting from Cape Town, noted. “At home, we’re fighting a draught. Look at all this wasted water.”

According to Russel Albas, president of Red Sox Baseball Club, the matter was reported on August 2.

A muddy mess. “In Cape Town we’re fighting a drought. Look at all the water wasted,” a visiting passer-by noted.

“No one from the municipality has ever been sent out,” he said. “The water has now started to damage the playing fields.”

Clr Simon Lapping told Express he was unaware of the issue but would forward the details surrounding the burst pipe to the proper department.

The municipality has been contacted for comment.
