LISTEN: Fourteen children injured in multi-vehicle accident in Edleen

The children were on their way to school when the accident happened.

Fourteen school children were among those lightly injured in an Edleen accident on Friday morning.

According to Kobeli Mokheseng, spokesperson for the metro police, four vehicles were involved in the accident on the corner of Granaat Street and Green Avenue at 7am.

The children were en route to school.

A Honda Civic driver braked, setting off a multi-vehicle accident including a Chevrolet Spark, Toyota Avanza and a CAM Inyathi minibus,” Mokheseng told Express.

It is not yet clear what the reason for the first driver’s emergency stop was.

“I was waiting at the traffic light when I heard a big bang behind me and the start of crying,” Ntombifuthi Thwala (45), from Tembisa told Express at the scene of the accident.

She was transporting three eight-year-old children in the Avanza.

“The driver [who crashed into me] said his brakes weren’t working, and with all the rain he lost control of the car,” a traumatised Thwala added.

Mokheseng confirmed that 11 children were in the minibus.

All 14 children were transported to four different hospitals with light injuries.

According to Mokheseng no case was filed with police.

Three eight-year-old children were transported in this car when the chain of events happened.
