Have a good time at the senior citizens club in Birchleigh
“We've never had a visitor who didn't want to join,” one member said.
Senior citizens wishing to put a spring into their step can look no further than Wynand Marais Senior Citizens Club in Birchleigh, where fun is guaranteed.
This club, which meets every Wednesday at Wynand Marais Community Centre on Olienhout Avenue from 8.30am until midday, was started 23 years ago.
“It brings senior citizens together for fun activities like darts, music quizzes, charades and guest speakers,” chairperson of the club Di Smuts told Express.
To sweeten the deal, club members chat over tea after the events. They can also look forward to two outings a year, a birthday lunch in June and a Christmas lunch.
Not a senior citizen? Not to fear, the club has two bingo days a year that are open to the public. The next one will be on September 29.
Express attended this week’s bingo game. More than 60 people looked like they were having heaps of fun, especially those who got to shout ‘Bingo!’ and pocket some prize money.

Residents who would like to join the club can attend their next meeting to see if they like it.
“After that, they can decide if they want to join,” member Phyllis McLachlan said, “but we’ve never had someone who didn’t want to join.”
Club fees are R160 a year and payable on a half-year basis. These fees go towards funding the hall.
