A man wanted for domestic violence and robbery was caught trying to set alight his girlfriend and her son in their Croydon home on September 26.
According to Sebenza SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Sharon Tsotsotso, the woman was asleep in her home with her son (20) and their helper when she was awakened by the sound of a breaking window.
She realised her bedroom was on fire and screamed to wake up the people in the house.
“She said she knew it was her ex-boyfriend who did it because he had been threatening her since she opened a case of assault against him,” said Tsotsotso.
“They managed to get out of the burning house unharmed.”
Sebenza SAPS officers were patrolling the area when they saw a man jumping a wall and running towards a parked car. They stopped the car and found two men, the driver and a passenger.
“The officers took the man who jumped over the wall back to the house and realised it was on fire,” said Tsotsotso. “The woman identified him as her ex-boyfriend who was wanted for assault,” she continued.
On arrival at the police station for detention, the police found the suspect was also wanted at Langlaagte Police Station for robbery. He was found guilty and escaped from the police van on his way to court for sentencing.
