In August, Rhodesfield residents were worried that multiple unaddressed burst pipes in their area might create a sinkhole.
Almost two months later, water is no longer streaming out of pipes in the middle of the Gladiator and Albatross streets intersection, but a big hole from the repair work remains.
A pile of bricks and dirt surround the hole, and people have also started littering into it. Inside, styrofoam takeaway boxes, plastic bags and empty chips packets could be seen.

“I don’t think the roads department has a programme in place, to be honest,” ward councillor Simon Lapping told Express on Thursday. “They are the absolute worst nightmare to deal with.”
According to Lapping, ground is usually given about two weeks to settle before it can be tarred over. Express reported on August 23 that the pipe had been repaired.
Across from this intersection, on the corner of Gladiator and Fury streets, a smaller hole also remains open afterrepair work to pipes. These two holes are not the only ones in Kempton Park.
Burst pipes on Isando Road resulted in a dam-sized hole. According to Lapping, work on filling this hole started this week.
“The department claims it should be completed by the end of next week, but I have my doubts.”
The Ekurhuleni Municipality was contacted for comment but did not reply in time for publication.
