R5 recovered in Umthambeka after police chase

One of the suspects jumped from the moving silver Polo carrying the rifle and pointed it at the police

Members of Ekurhuleni North Cluster Crime Combating Unit recovered an illegal R5 rifle with 30 live rounds of ammunition after a fierce chase between the police and suspects at Umthambeka Section on the morning of October 11.

According to the Tembisa South SAPS communications officer, Captain Neldah Sekgobela, two suspects were driving a silver Polo at Umthambeka Section when the police tried to stop their vehicle.

“The two African males refused to stop on the police’s request. One of the suspects jumped off from the moving silver Polo carrying the rifle and pointed at the police. In the blink of an eye, the police shot the suspect in the hip next to the buttocks and he was cornered and arrested. The driver of the vehicle was also arrested,” said Sekgobela.

These are the illegal firearms recovered by the Ekurhuleni North Cluster Crime Combating Unit in the early hours of October 11.

In a separate incident in the same area at about 2.15am, a crime intelligence-driven operation, in conjunction with the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) officers, received a tip-off about illegal firearms.

“When they proceeded to the said address, they recovered two illegal pistols. The police arrested two suspects for possession of unlicensed firearms. One of the two suspects was detained at Ivory Park SAPS and the other at Tembisa South SAPS,” added Sekgobela.

Ekurhuleni North Cluster Commander Maj Gen Leshabane applauded members for their swift response in ensuring that suspects who carrying unlicensed firearms are brought to book.
