Cousins Karabo and Keisha Matalane of Birchleigh did exceptionally well, winning first and second places at the Oppie Tong Af 2018 public speaking competition on October 16.Keisha (13) secured the first place and Karabo (9) placed second for all grades. Keisha is in Grade Seven and Karabo in Grade Three at Laerskool Kempton Park.
The competition took place at Midstream Ridge Primary School. The first round took place in June and they had since proceeded to more rounds until they reached the final round.
“I entered the competition because I know I can speak well. I have been doing public speaking since I was in Grade One,” said Keisha.
She says she wants to go to Rhodesfield Technical High School because she believes she will get the right education that will help her become a commercial lawyer.
Karabo, giving a little chuckle, said: “I want to be just like my Keisha when I am in Grade Seven. I am happy to have won second place because I am only nine years old. I want to win first place next year. At least Keisha won’t be there to beat me because she is going to high school.”
“I don’t have any stage fright and that is my biggest advantage. Public speaking is something I love to do and I write my own poetry,” said Keisha.
With a bright future in public speaking, the duo wishes to enter more competitions locally and internationally and win more awards.
