About 80 EFF members arrived at Festival Mall around 4pm on Friday afternoon, closing down the two Chatz stores and the Vodacom shop.
According to reliable information, about 20 members entered the centre singing, marching from entrance 4 to entrance 1.
They apparently accused Vodacom leadership of insulting them on national TV. They demanded that Vodacom shops remained closed until the Vodacom CEO issued a written apology to the EFF.
The EFF did not confirm this.
Failure to apologise and re-opening the shops, would result in the burning of all three shops, the source told Express on Friday evening.
Express was told they left, promising they would be back in a “jiffy” should their informers inform them of opened shops at the mall.
The three shops remained closed on Friday and police would return early on Saturday morning to monitor the situation.
The EFF’s Mampuru Mampuru replied via Kempton Express’ WhatsApp query: “Vodacom needs to explain their actions to the leadership of @EFFSouthAfrica or their shops in Tembisa and Kempton Park will remain closed till further notice.”
The hashtag #YouPushUsWePushBack” was added to the message.
The EFF’s Izek Mampana told Express: “Business must stay out of politics.”
The protest was sparked by an image shown as part of a keynote address by one of the evening’s speakers at the Vodacom Journalist of the Year Award, but Vodacom is taking all the heat for it.
