Hollywood star plays sport with Tembisa learners

Michael B. Jordan encourages Tembisa children to participate in sport.

A Hollywood star took some time to train and keep active with Thuthuka Primary School children on November 25.

Michael B. Jordan, who is well known for playing the character of Erik Killmonger, the main villain in Black Panther, was the school’s guest of honour.

He encouraged the children to be dedicated to whatever sporting code they take part in.

“Do sport, exercise and listen to your parents.

“To be focused and disciplined about something can help you achieve whatever you want to achieve in life, I promise you,” said Jordan.

He told the children that he also comes from humble beginnings and that he listened to his parents. Jordan advised the children to surround themselves with positive people and create teamwork to keep active.

Jordan took the opportunity to promote his new movie, Creed II, in which he plays a boxer named Adonis Creed. He told reporters that besides playing a boxer in the movie, in real life he has been playing sport from as far back as he can remember.

“Be part of a team and be able to practise, work hard and not be selfish. I think teamwork is a skill that you can take throughout life which can really help you to accomplish your goals.

“Obviously, I play a boxer on the screen. All the hours and time that you put into the gym to get your body right, to get your mind right to prepare for a fight, that is the type of discipline you need throughout life,” Jordan added.

SuperSport’s Vaughn Bishop said they have organised a programme called Let’s Play, which is about getting children physically active through sport.

Learners have fun outdoors.

“There are many initiatives that we engage in when organising for children to play sport, one being physical education. Sadly, many children around South African schools do not do physical education,” said Bishop.

He said one of the issues that inhibit the holistic development of children is lack of sports fields.

“A lot of schools in South Africa do not have playing fields. As part of the process, together with our partners, we engage with various schools around the country to see what sort of playing facilities they have and whether their facilities meet our criteria. We reward that school with a multipurpose playing field,” Bishop explained.

He said Thuthuka Primary School is a beneficiary of the programme and construction of the school’s sports field will begin early next year.

Jordan officially handed over the sports field.

Children and parents also had an opportunity to watch Creed II.

The children are excited to create memories with Hollywood star Michael B. Jordan.
