More than 6 700 residents still don’t have wheelie bins

All those who have not collected a free bin should do so as soon as possible

More than a year after the initial roll-out of wheelie bins in Kempton Park, over 6 700 residents have still not collected their bins.

Birch Acres has the largest number of residents who have not collected the new 240L waste wheelie bins (2 004), followed by Glen Marais (560) and Norkem Park (516).

The City urges all residents who have not collected their 240L wheelie bin to do so at Kempton Park Waste Management Depot situated at the corner of H Lewis Street and Kelvin Road in Spartan from Monday to Friday from 8am to 3.30pm.

Residents must ensure they bring along a copy of their identity document and municipal account statement to the depot for proper identification, said Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the metro.

“The City’s new fleet of waste trucks are fitted with high-bin lifting mechanisms which makes it impossible to mechanically lift and empty waste from other forms of waste containers that are not 240L wheelie bins.”

The bins are issued for free. However, they remain the property of the City and should therefore be used only for waste collection purposes. Residents who make use of the bins are urged to place bins outside their homes before 7am on collection days provided by the City.

The number of houses in other areas of Kempton Park that have not collected bins are Kempton Park (482), Pomona (483), Terenure (477), Birchleigh (458), Witfontein (327), Esther Park (236), Van Riebeeck Park (228), Rhodesfield (171), Bonaero Park (162), Croydon (140).

The total number of uncollected 240L waste wheelie bins in the entire Kempton Park is 6 753.

Where a wheelie bin is reported as stolen, residents must approach the nearest depot to re-apply for a replacement within 24 hours of theft.

Subsequently, council will assess and make a decision to replace the wheelie bin free of charge provided a police case number and an affidavit is submitted from the resident in which they state the bin has been stolen.
