A man from Kaalfontein near Midrand has been robbed of more than R20 000 during the weekend.
According to the Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Capt Bernard Matimulane, the victim was followed from a bank in Midrand.
“Along the way, in Ebony Park, he stopped to talk to someone he knew. As they were talking, he was confronted by strangers travelling in another vehicle,” said Matimulane.
Matimulane explained one of the occupants came to him, firearm in hand and demanded money.
“Another robber went straight to the car, took the bag containing the money and they left,” he added.
The station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Brig David Mbongeni Ngcobo, has called upon residents of Ivory Park and all of its precincts to exercise great care when conducting financial transactions to avoid falling victim to being followed and robbed.
“In the interests of one’s safety, people should refrain from withdrawing large amounts of money as this may have negative repercussions for them. They should rather ask for advice from their financial institutions for the best and safest ways of transferring money and paying other obligations, without carrying the money with them,” said Ngcobo.
Ngcobo added to avoid falling victim to these kinds of robberies, the public is urged and advised to:
• Not carry large amounts of money with them.
• Be aware of their surroundings, especially when coming from withdrawing money.
• Rush to the nearest police station should they become suspicious that they are being followed.
• Be suspicious of any vehicle that makes a turn whenever they turn, especially several turns.
