Churches from across the Kempton Park community took hands over the weekend to host a fun-filled camp for about 160 local children.
According to NG Kempton Kruin’s Rev Michelle van Tonder, it is the eighth year that Kempton Kruin has held a weekend camp, but the first time that they’ve collaborated with Maranatha Community Church, Kaleideo, NG Kempton Hoogland and NG Bonaero Park.
“It is so good for children to meet other children in the community who might differ from them,” Van Tonder told Express about the event, which was hosted in Afrikaans and English.
“Working with the other churches was wonderful. The dream is to do this annually.”Children between the ages of seven and 12 enjoyed camping on the church grounds of Kempton Kruin, while some preferred to sleep at home and join the fun each morning.
“One of the themes was the messages of John 4, that Jesus doesn’t focus on our mistakes but looks at our hearts,” Van Tonder said. “The children were taught to also look at the hearts of people, even if they are different from them.”
Van Tonder added that the idea behind the camp was for children to find their identity in Christ, but also to have a fun-filled weekend. “We didn’t want them to feel like they were going to school, we wanted them to have fun.”
When Express paid a visit to the camp it certainly seemed like heaps of fun, with children playing games and laughing on jumping castles.
