The executive mayor of Ekurhuleni, Clr Mzwandile Masina, has welcomed the National Assembly’s decision to adopt the Constitutional Review Committee’s report on the expropriation of land without compensation.
Two hundred and nine parliamentarians voted in favour of adopting the committee’s report, with 91 voting against its adoption, most of them from the DA. There were no abstentions.
Masina said: “The adoption of this report is a practical and positive step towards undoing the injustices of the past and building a democratic society. In line with our pro-poor agenda as government and the prescripts of the Freedom Charter, we can no longer procrastinate on the issue of land reform in South Africa.
“In September this year, we took it upon ourselves to initiate the process of expropriating four pieces of land without compensation within the city for the purpose of public interest and inclusive human settlement.
“Yesterday’s [December 4] announcement further encourages us to pursue this effort expeditiously and ultimately restore the dignity of the masses of our people in Ekurhuleni.”
