Ivory Park cops recover firearm, arrest suspect

Police will intensify stop-and-search operations

Members of the Ivory Park SAPS Crime Prevention Unit have in the early hours of November 19 arrested a 33-year-old man for alleged possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

According to the Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Capt Bernard Matimulane, with the National Safer Festive Season operation having been launched, the Ivory Park SAPS wants to ensure that people in this precinct are safe.

“To achieve this, police will intensify stop-and-search operations such as the one conducted this morning, which resulted in the recovery of an unlicensed firearm and the arrest of a suspect,” said Matimulane.

The station commander, Brig David Mbongeni Ngcobo, has welcomed this arrest and is assuring the residents that his staff will double their efforts to ensure that those who will be around during this period are safe, both in their homes and other public places.

“For us to double our successes, and recover more firearms, we humbly request the assistance of all law-abiding citizens to provide us with any information regarding crime and criminal activities,” Ngcobo said.

The 33-year-old man is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court to face a charge of illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The pistol had six rounds of live ammunition and had its serial number erased.
