A Christmas message from the executive mayor

For those who will travel to spend this pious period with their families and friends, drive safely.

“The 2018 year is coming to an end and with it, Christmas and New Year are fast approaching.

“This period of the year is known for joyous celebrations, festivities and generous giving of gifts. It has for ages distinguished itself from other periods of the year.

“For us at the City of Ekurhuleni, it is also a period of deep reflection on the commitments that we make every year to our residents and ratepayers, and the gratitude that we owe to our hard-working and dedicated officials who always strive to do more with limited resources.

“It is through their most profound dedication and diligence that we as the city are counted among the very best, and we are grateful to them for being the embodiment of the values underpinning our governance model – Batho Pele.

“Speaking of our commitments, we can proudly speak of them as having been immensely achieved, as the year ends. And, those achievements are countless. Among them is the handover of title deeds that we achieved through our accelerated service delivery programme – Siyaqhuba; the connecting of electricity to informal settlements; the building of roads and new infrastructure; and more importantly, the collecting of refuse every week, and providing clean water every day to our residents.

“These achievements have been noted by external observers, and of notable importance, is the recent Gauteng City-Region Observatory’s fifth Quality of Life Survey (2017/2018), which is the biggest social attitudes surveys in sub-Saharan Africa. Besides highlighting the improving quality of life in Gauteng, it named the City of Ekurhuleni as doing tremendously well compared to its peer-metros in Gauteng.

“I pass the greatest of gratitude to our residents to have registered their appreciation of the work we do by participating in the survey, and putting forward the facts that they do know of the good services we deliver every day. We are indebted to our residents for their acknowledgement of our work and shall strive not to let the guard down by regressing. In turn, we shall do all we can to improve.

“I would like to wish our residents, ratepayers and employees a Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year. For those who will travel, to spend this pious period with their families and friends; drive safely; do not drink and drive; and arrive alive.

“I call upon motorists to respect the rules of the road and law enforcement officers to enforce the rules with the required vigour.”
