Birchleigh pub claims loud music is not coming from its premises
The manager added that the pub’s music is switched off at midnight
A few Birchleigh and Van Riebeeck Park residents say they are fed up with the noise caused by a local pub.
The pub, however, says the noise is not coming from them.
“It is an absolute disturbance,” a 73-year-old man, who wished to remain anonymous, told Express about Prime Time Sports Bar on Elgin Road. The complainant started a petition against the noise, which has since gained 27 signatures.
“The music goes on after midnight. If I could afford to soundproof my home I would,” he added.
According to the manager of Prime Time, who also wished to remain anonymous, these allegations are not true.
“When we switch on our music, I go stand outside. If I can hear the music, I tell them to turn it down until I can’t hear it anymore.”
The manager added that the pub’s music is switched off at midnight.
“This year, we’ve doubled our client basis. Unfortunately, with success, you might make a few enemies.”
Ward councillor Gideon van Zyl said Prime Time’s defence was contradicted by multiple complaints he had received from the community.
“I’ve been called by locals at 1am who told me the noise was coming from Prime Time,” Van Zyl told Express.
He has reached out to the metro police about the issue but said nothing came of it. Van Zyl also recently lodged a complaint with the Ekurhuleni environmental health division.
“I understand that people need a place to let their hair down, but they also need to be considerate of their community. I hope we can all resolve this issue together.”
According to a previously published statement by Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the metro, noise pollution is regulated by the City’s noise control regulations.
A technical test is necessary to see if noise has risen above the rating set in the South African Bureau of Standards Publication No. 0103.
Van Zyl said noise above 95 decibels was unacceptable.
The metro failed to comment.
The manager of Prime Time urged residents with complaints to call him on 079 535 0761.
