More than 800 vehicles stopped at N3 roadblock
With the looming industrial shut down, closing of schools, long road trips to holiday destinations, this period has high traffic volumes
The MMC for community safety in the City of Ekurhuleni, Clr Vivienne Chauke, urged road users to ensure they obey the rules of the road and to be courteous to fellow road users during this holiday period.
She made this plea during the launch of a safer festive season campaign on December 11 on the N3 southbound between the Grey Avenue on-ramp and Heidelberg turn-off.
With the looming industrial shut down, closing of schools, and long road trips to holiday destinations, this period has high traffic volumes with revelers prone to high alcohol consumption leading to vulnerability to crashes. It is essential that we all do the right things and contribute to the reduction of avoidable crashes that are normally accompanied by unpleasant ramifications, Chauke added.

The City of Ekurhuleni EMPD, EMS members and the Gauteng Traffic Police, together with the Gauteng Department of Education officials, distributed pamphlets on road safety, dangers of substance abuse and domestic abuse and motorists were wished a safe and enjoyable holiday period.
Although the objective of the launch was educational, 71 citations were issued for various offences, three vehicles were discontinued, two persons were arrested for fraudulent documents and possession of dagga during the roadblock which took place between 9am until noon.
Over 60 law enforcement officers stopped more than 800 vehicles in the process, said Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for the EMPD.
