EMPD out in full force to keep our roads safe

In yet another blitz by Ekurhuleni Metro Police a driver travelling at a staggering 173km/h was arrested on the R21 on Sunday.

He was one of seven motorists who ended up behind bars for exceeding the speed limit, said Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for the EMPD.

The operation took place from 5am to 10am on R21 between the Olifantsfontein Road bridge and the Engen 1-Stop filling station, which is a 120km/h zone.

Six of the arrestees were male and one female aged between 26 and 40.

Reasons given by them for speeding included rushing to visit family, rushing to the airport to being late for a funeral.
They were locked up after clocking speeds of 173, 172, 172, 171, 166, 165 and 163 km/h.

Eight spot summonses were also issued for using cellphones without a hands-free kit, disregarding of traffic signals and without a driver’s license in the vehicle.

The arrested drivers were detained at Olifantsfontein Police Station on charges of reckless and negligent driving and subsequently released after each had posted bail of R1 000 each.

They will appear in Tembisa Magistrate’s Court.
