School gives back to the community
Bright Start College and the ANC Youth League bring Christmas happiness to orphanages.
On December 8 Bright Start College and the ANC Youth League reached out to the needy children at Eco City Hall in Ivory Park.
The event was an initiative spearheaded by Grade Six learners, who were on a campaign to collect clothes for the identified orphanages.
The teacher, More-Blessing Sibanda, said the learners took it upon themselves to collect clothes and other items to be donated to orphanages in Tembisa.
“Today we were handing over the collected clothes to the identified orphanage homes.
“What made us undertake this project is because the learners were taught about the importance of social responsibility.

“Under social responsibility, we teach about different ways of caring for others.
“As we deliberated on different ways of helping the poor, the learners suggested to organise an event to show their care for other people,” said educator Sibanda.
“We met with the learners’ committee to start a programme to look into how learners would collect old clothes and how they would be distributed to orphanages,” Sibanda explained.
Sibanda said the committee contacted the ANC Youth League who helped to identify orphanages that needed help.

Another teacher, Rarang Makwea, said this was the first time the school hosted such an event and hoped this would be an annual event.
“We are not going to stop. Our learners are excited about their giving gesture.
“The community is also happy. We pray to God to help us to continue with the project,” Makwea said.
Headmaster Dolla Greyvenstein thanked the Grade Six learners for the initiative.
“We are excited about this event. This will grow bigger and bigger.
“We thank the learners and teachers who participated in this initiative because we are an entity that works together,” said Greyvenstein.

Ivory Park North Ward 77 ANC youth league deputy secretary Phillipine Segata said the area has a huge number of orphanages and appealed to residents to help.
“As we are heading towards Christmas, this will make the orphans feel special, loved and appreciated.
“As a Thuma Mina programme we know that the children are happy and we are happy to work with Bright Start College,” said Segata.
