The festive season is in full swing and so are traffic offences, it seems.
Operations led by local SAPS members and EMPD officers saw the arrest of 43 people across Kempton Park from last week Wednesday to Reconciliation Day on Monday.
“Law enforcement agencies have been hard at work to ensure the community of Kempton Park enjoys the festive season,” said Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for the Kempton Park SAPS.
His station arrested 26 suspects for alleged drinking and driving.
“These operations will continue to ensure the public enjoys the festive season,” Mtshali added.
In the early hours of December 12, the EMPD High-Speed Unit nabbed five speedsters in the Edleen area, who drove up to 114 km/h in a 60km/h zone.
“The arrestees were all males aged between 26 and 52,” Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for the EMPD, told Express. The suspects included a speedster on a Harley Davidson, who clocked 114km/h. According to Kgasago, he claimed he was dashing to assist his girlfriend.
The speeding did not end there. December 15 was a busy day for EMPD members, as they nabbed 15 drivers for driving over the speed limit on CR Swart Road towards Edleen.
“Ten other drivers received fines for using cellphones, disregarding traffic signals, overtaking on a barrier line, seatbelt not fastened, number plate not displayed and without a driver’s licence in the vehicle,” Kgasago said.
One of the suspects arrested was a 28-year-old man who drove 130km/h, double the speed limit. The other was a 44-year-old woman, who clocked 109km/h.
Reconciliation Day was not without traffic offences either. According to Kgasago, nine drivers left Pomona Road in handcuffs for exceeding the speed limit of 120km/h.
“The suspects were all males between the ages of 21 and 45, driving between 194km/h and 164km/h,” Kgasago added. These drivers were later released from Kempton Park SAPS, after posting bail of R1 000 each.
