Drugs totalling at least R114-million in value were confiscated at OR Tambo International Airport in the past two weeks.
According to a press release by the South African Revenue Service (Sars), customs officials confiscated a substance used to manufacture Mandrax in two separate incidents on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
“Officials found substances weighing 1 600kg and 1 581kg,” the statement read. “The SAPS’s Forensic Services Laboratory confirmed the drugs to be worth R90-m.”
These good were handed to the SAPS for further investigation.
Information about the suspects remains unclear.
This is not the first drug bust the airport has seen during the festive season. Last week Friday, sexual enhancement tablets worth about R24-m were found.
“Tackling corruption effectively is imperative for us as we continue our journey to rebuild trust,” the Sars statement concluded.
