Norkem Park rapper is making it in a men’s world
Femal rap artist Nothando Mabuza wants to change the rap industry by being more than just a female rapper.
“I am not a female rapper, I am a rapper who happens to be a female,” said Nothando Mabuza (24), better known as Dynasty FutureBetty.
The Soweto-born rap artist from Norkem Park and former learner of Norkem Park High School, studied performing arts at Oakfields College in Pretoria where she obtained her SPACE in Performing Arts.
She describes herself as a true feminist at heart.
“I am a mother to a two-year-old and I like to think that I am an all-rounder,” said Mabuza. “My rap journey began when I was in Grade Eight when Okmalumkoolkat released his mixtape called Dirty Parafin. That is where it all started. I thought to myself if a female can do that, then she is going to go far.”
She was inspired to start rapping because not a lot of females were rapping and she likes to be different and do things out of the box.
“Despite the fact that rapping is a male-dominated industry, I know I can beat the odds because women are powerful beyond measure and very influential,” said Mabuza.
Mabuza says her target market is females of all ages. She raps about different situations people go through, whether old or young.
“My biggest achievements this year are shaping me to be the rapper I want to become. I have done Shiz Live, a hip-hop show on eTV. I won a social media challenge called the Konakele challenge which leads me to make a song with Busiswa, a well-renowned house vocalist, DJ Athi and Da Fresh. One of my biggest songs is playing on radio, which is also a big achievement for me,” she said.
The rapper released a three-track EP called Coronation in October, which is available on all digital platforms like Deezer, iTunes and Spotify.
“I see a very bright future for myself because everything that is supposed to happen in the future is happening right now, so you can imagine what is going to happen in the future,” she added.
“I have my own production company and in five years’ time I see myself having more businesses, making more money and giving back to where I am from.”
She hopes to work with international artist Nicki Minaj and locally she wishes to work with Okmalumkoolkat.
“I would like to thank the people who contributed to my success, Lebang Kgosana from Shiz Live, Samke Mhlongo from YFM and Tiido Ntwana, my DJ,” concluded Mabuza.
