EMPD freeway unit removes pedestrians from busy highways
The arrested minors were released on a warning after being dropped off at safe places

On December 21 and 22 between 8am and 5pm, EMPD Freeway Unit members were out in full force on the N12 at Kingsway, R21 between the Engen 1-Stop and Voortrekker Road, as well as on the N3 between Heidelberg and Pelser on the lookout for pedestrians illegally using the freeway.
On December 21, 19 adults and 14 minors were arrested, said Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for the EMPD.
The arrested minors were released on a warning after being dropped off at safe places, ie filling stations and police stations, to be picked up by their guardians.
The arrestees were charged at respective police stations for walking on the freeway where they are prohibited and were fined R250 each for the offense.
Fifty-five spot summonses were issued for moving offenses and documentation.
On December 22, 14 arrests of pedestrians were made on the N12 between the Kingsway and Putfontein exits. They were all charged at Daveyton Police Station and slapped with a R250 fine each.
