Not a peep could be heard from the Grade One classes at Kreft Primary School on Wednesday morning, as 170 excited new schoolgoers sat quietly in their classes, already keen to learn.
No one was as eager as little Bandile Sithole (6), who woke up at 4.45am, ready to go to school. The youngster’s excitement was understandable, as he had watched mom Noma Sithole – a Grade One teacher at Kreft – go to school for years.
This year, the school also welcomed two sets of twins. They are sisters Chimamanda (6) and Kelechi (6) Opara, and brother and sister Kwenzokuhle (6) and Yenzokuhle (6) Mkhwanazi.
Little Selina Mwelase (6) was the shortest of all the Grade One girls, and Queen Wchilda (6) the tallest.
“I like homework and playing,” Selina, who would like to be a doctor someday, told Express. Queen would like to become a nurse.
“If you don’t keep quiet you won’t pass,” she said, adding that she loves to learn.

Kgotso Matlalo (6) was the shortest boy of all the Grade Ones.
“I love playing and writing in my books,” he said with a big smile. He wants to be a police officer when he grows up.
Next to him was the tallest boy of the grade, Amogelang Lekoba.
“I want to be an animal-human when I grow up,” he said, grinning. According to him, the playground is the best part of school.
