Last of three suspected street name sign thieves caught

The suspects are believed to have operated in Kempton Park, Edenvale, Boksburg and Germiston.

The last suspect in a three-man syndicate that saw to the disappearance of street signs across Edenvale and Kempton Park was arrested on Monday.

According to Capt Lesibana Molokomme, spokesperson for Norkem Park SAPS, the suspect was arrested after police received a tip-off that he was to appear in court in a different theft case, which was reported to Sebenza SAPS in August 2018.

His arrest came nearly a month after his two alleged co-conspirators were arrested in Croydon and Germiston respectively.

Express reported at the time that local street signs such as Malvina Road, Gunther Street, Fynbos Road, Dick Mance Avenue and at least 50 others were stolen by these suspects.

“We believe the suspects could also be guilty of street sign thefts that occurred in Boksburg and Germiston,” Molokomme added.

All three suspects will face charges of malicious damage to property in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court.
