Two armed attacks in Van Riebeeck Park driveways

In both incidents, the armed attackers escaped in an SUV.

Two Van Riebeeck Park residents became the victims of armed hijackers, and were attacked in their driveways this past week.

Although an SUV was used in both incidents, and the assailants in both cases were heavily armed, the police could not link the incidents.

According to Capt Lesibana Molokomme, spokesperson for Norkem Park SAPS, the latest incident took place on March 28 at 5.30am.

“It is alleged the male victim was confronted by three men, two armed with pistols and one with a rifle, while on his way to work. The suspects ordered the victim to lay down on the ground and drove off with his car, a black Hyundai Atos, registration number SNX 255 GP,” said Molokomme.

“It is further alleged the suspects were driving a silver Kia SUV, registration unknown.”

In the victim’s car were a cellphone, wallet with bank cards, driver’s licence, Sassa card and R600 cash. Police were later called to Blackthorn Street, several blocks away from the hijacking scene, where a member of the community found some of the victims card’s.

On March 20, just after 5am, an attempted hijacking occurred in the same suburb. The victim was attacked by four armed men on his way out. Three of the men were armed with rifles.

Molokomme said the men also drove an SUV. The suspects fled the scene with the victim’s laptop when they were disturbed.

Nobody had been arrested.
