Kempton Park SAPS station commander Brig Samuel Maredi warns community members about a scam making the rounds.
This comes after a 44-year-old female victim was scammed by people pretending to be police officers on Tuesday morning.
“The victim had just withdrawn R5 000 from one of the banks on West Street when a man suddenly smeared her shoulder with an unknown substance and ran away,” said Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS.
“Another man approached her and offered help and lured her to a white VW Polo with two occupants inside.”
The men allegedly introduced themselves as police officers.
“The victim also said she was taken to a secluded area where she was given a liquid that would remove the unknown substance,” said Mtshali.
“She was allegedly asked to get out of the car and remove the liquid at a certain place.”
The victim was also advised to leave her purse in the car, but when she returned from removing the substance, the suspects were gone. She later received a notification from her bank that R600 had been withdrawn from her account.
Mtshali said community members are urged to be more careful and vigilant at all times as the scammers use fake police identification cards at times to lure and rob unsuspecting victims of their hard-earned money.
A theft case is being investigated and anyone with information can contact Kempton Park Police Station on 011 393 8600 or 08600 10111 or send an SMS to the Crime Line number on 32211.
