Get your children into conservation
Members of SANParks Honorary Rangers will tell how young people can learn about nature and conservation in a fun way.
How you can give your children a chance to learn about South African conservation is the theme of the next evening talk at Modderfontein Conservation Society.
The illustrated presentation will take place at Modderfontein Town Hall, 1 Casino Road at 7.30pm on April 25.
Members of SANParks Honorary Rangers will talk about how young people can learn about nature and conservation in a fun way by enrolling in the SANParks National Junior Honorary Rangers Project, which is designed to instil in them a love of wildlife and a passion to learn more.
Heading up the presentation team is Carmin Mohr, chairperson of the SANParks National Junior Honorary Rangers Project, along with SANParks East Rand facilitators Charles Dey, James Tavendale and Alison Coppin. The team has put together a presentation that will enthral and motivate their audience.
Junior Honorary Rangers (JHRs) are volunteers between the ages of 12 and 18 who take part in a youth development programme that hones various life skills. It is the junior leg of the Honorary Rangers (HRs), which have a tradition of volunteer service to SANParks.
The East Rand JHRs meet on the third Saturday morning of each month at Northfield Methodist Church in Benoni between 9am and noon. The programme includes daylong excursions and parents are encouraged to join in.
In addition to their training, JHRs are encouraged to take a leading role in conservation clubs and environmental projects in their schools and communities.
They are also inspired to participate in the Junior Field Guide Association of Southern Africa (FGASA) training programme and to take part in voluntary work for conservation efforts such as Wildlife in Crisis.
Visitors are welcome to attend the talk. An entrance fee of R30 is charged to help cover expenses. For more information call Peter Olive on 083 4616221.
