Norkem Park High School raises funds to repair school building

About 200 people attended Norkem High’s fun run and walk.

Ten-year-old Siyanda Malone proved to be the fittest when he won Norkem Park High’s fun walk and run on June 17.

Malone, from Birch Acres, said he enjoyed the race and felt excited to have claimed first place.

“I just focused on my pace and carried on with the race. It was easy for me and it feels good to have run and won,” said victorious Malone.

Kgabo Maupye (25), who is Malone’s coach, came second. Maupye said he was proud of his athletes and felt the run was fun and well-organised. In third place was Thando Motha (14).

Roy Mkhonza, chairperson of the school governing body at Norkem Park High School, said the 5km fun run was a fund-raiser for the school and managed to draw about 200 participants.

Children and parents worked up a sweat during the aerobics session after the fun run.

“Our school is falling apart so we are trying to raise funds in order to do some much-needed repairs. This initiative was a start of more we intend to host,” said Mkhonza.

“Our infrastructure sub-committee came up with this idea of a fun run and we supported it. We might have another event in September.”

An hour after all the fun runners and walkers returned, aerobics specialists from Daveyton, Noluthando Mazibuko and Sibusiso Zwane, lead aerobics sessions that saw children and parents sweating up a whole lot of fun.

Soccer and netball matches were also among the day’s activities.

“Thank you to everybody who supported the initiative and helped make the event the success it was. We also appeal to anyone who would be interested in assisting the school with raising funds to inquire at the school,” added Mkhonza.

“Thank you to Mazibuko and Zwane who also helped and assisted with the aerobics.”
